Brain-Based Coaching

Driven by Outcomes

Bridging the gap between employers and employees one brain at a time

TRAINING WITH THE BRAIN IN MIND

Our innovative brain-based methodology is designed to help thinkers, teams and organizations benefit from self-awareness. This approach scientifically validates that everyone has access to the development of new ways of thinking. In turn, these new pathways can support self-development resulting in lasting organizational change from the top down. No need to fret… This isn’t shock therapy we’re talking about!

With recent discoveries in neuroscience providing more accessible knowledge, it’s a game changer for hiring specialists and leaders alike to understand the real potential of every individual.

Brain-based coaching is the collaboration of strategies applied to how our brain works in the context of employee development. Our groundbreaking research compliments common tools such as the DISC assessment by bringing self-awareness to a whole new level.

It’s time to raise the B.A.R.R. within your organization to create lasting behavioral change and higher profitability.

BARR – A research-based model for building effective people strategies

We know what you’re thinking, “here is another acronym to remember.” But we promise, our BARR model wasn’t just plucked from the ether. It’s real, it’s meaningful, and it’s based in science.  However, before we explain further, we should cover the concept of Brain-Based Learning. Brain-Based Education is the purposeful engagement of strategies based on principles derived from solid scientific research. Through this concept, we have constructed an innovative new way to approach old human capital problems, all in collaboration with our own team of neuroscience experts.

For example, it isn’t uncommon to encounter the belief that intelligence is a fixed quality that primarily stays unchanged throughout an individual’s life. However, recent discoveries in neuroscience have uncovered that the brain adapts when it learns, and that after practice it becomes easier for continued learning of these new skills. The science not only agrees with this idea, there is a name for it: The growth mindset.

Through awareness of behaviors, motivators and appropriate brain-based methodologies,  a leader and their workforce can see valuable change from the top down. It’s not only a system, it’s a promise. We make your people problems ours, turning both recruiting and coaching into a collaborative growth session utilizing our in-house workforce research. We add value by demonstrating how our latest brain science data can aid the common growth company in becoming a more effective, healthier workforce.

Assessments

When we think assessments, the most common typically come to mind first. Household names such as the DISC, Meyers Briggs, and StrengthFinders move to the forefront as some of the most recognizable behavioral-based assessments around. Consequently, when most companies attempt to develop their leaders, these instruments become the widely accepted tool in a quest towards self-awareness. Ahh, if only the brain were that simple. While these assessments are certainly effective, behaviors embody just one piece to this complicated puzzle. At APA Solutions, we utilize an assessment that includes 5 sciences (TriMetrix DNA + EQ ) to discover a person’s behaviors, motivators, key competences and level of emotional intelligence. We effectively provide game changing self-awareness for leadership at the organizational level, or for an individual that is interested in personal-development.

We can even take it one step further by continuing to analyze the data as it relates to a role, and how that effects the strategic goal of the company. It’s not mad science, it’s a process called Leadership Benchmarking. As we know, a role or position can’t talk, so we must turn to individuals that are considered subject experts. These experts hold roles that reside in and around the given leader’s position and can provide insight into the desired performance. However, natural biases, or predetermined preferences and feelings, can disrupt the judgment of these individuals.

Utilizing one of our brain-based coaches, we can reveal some of these deep seeded biases, and guide your group to a fair discussion. Essentially, we act as a catalyst for developing a clear understanding of what a superior leader looks like. This assessment process leads to the discovery of knowledge, intrinsic motivators, personal attributes, behaviors and hard skills required and/or needed for development. After this process, a customized development plan can be created for the specific role or individual. The development plan will be in direct correlation to your company’s strategic business plans. This is where greatness lies.

Try a sample Leadership Assessment

Too often in the workforce, employers and employees believe their brain is static, leading them to think that talent and progress is a permanent thing. However, advances in neuroscience have uncovered that every time you work hard, stretch yourself and learn something new, your brain forms new connections.

By understanding the manner in which the brain influences our behavior, we can create a greater awareness of our actions, emotions and biases. With this self-awareness in place, we can enhance our ability to understand others, and what may be driving their behavior and needs. In turn, this new found understanding of the brain helps facilitate better communication and relationships.

Many have experienced the nerves and/or excitement of a company committing to the use of a behavioral assessment. However, once completed, no one is quite sure what the heck to do with all that information. Our assessments are always accompanied by a debrief from brain-based coaches certified in NeuroLeadership, DISC, and Motivators. This ensures that the participants not only understand themselves, but how this new found information relates to their career and company.

Our TTI TriMetrix DNA staff assessment measures behaviors, motivators and competencies in relation to the business world.  Through brain-based coaching, participants will understand how to adapt their behavioral styles, become aware of their motivators, and better fit the needs of their work environment, all while gaining an understanding how to communicate to different styles of people.

If you want to try a unique exercise, get a group of hiring authorities together (focus group of 4 to 6) from your company. Ask them to individually write down 3 traits that they feel truly embody what an impact leader looks like. Next, ask them to read off their answers. Now observe, are the answers congruent among the group? Are they fact based responses or data verified? Do they align with the business strategy and how the role helps advance it?

If not, they must be classified as opinions by well-intentioned leaders who genuinely want what’s best for the company. However, like most hiring authorities of our time, they naturally fall prey to the trap of unconscious bias. The good news is that you’re in incredibly good company. The better news is that with some new tools, you could be light years ahead of your competition for talent. Who doesn’t want to save tons of money by avoiding misplaced recruiting efforts, poor selections and bad fits?

In comes our Neuroscience team. We have the capability of customizing assessments that align to your specific company, geography and role. In turn, you find the true prototype of a company specific impact performer using math and science. Selecting employees with assessed and documented skills, our in house Ph.D. data scientists will review your people history, and devise a prototype that can be utilized for each phase of the candidate experience; Identification, retention and development. It’s time to raise the B.A.R.R. on the candidate assessment experience.

We provide a highly effective job skills assessment that will firmly establish validity, ensure acceptance of outcomes, and help drive strategic change. Make your people development process proactive rather than reactive with our customized assessments.

Data Collection & Research

We combine our in-house research with a team of neuroscience experts to reveal the true performance of your workforce, and open the lid on possible top-down disengagement. Our surveys and instruments are designed to aid in creating baseline data by utilizing appropriate methodologies, questions and feedback, while navigating known biases and common anxieties surrounding the results.

This process generates information while analyzing and translating the data into a set of actions that will develop and build upon the existing workforce. To execute on the established method, we first need to map out the strategy, conduct interviews and focus groups, and then observe the collected data before presenting actionable “next steps.”

Learn research and data interpretation best practices to ensure that you can produce your own actionable goals for organizational development from data you collected.

DELIVERABLES:

  • Establish mind blowing baseline data for company engagement
  • Identify prototypes for high performers
  • Reveal trends of low performers for all levels of your organization
  • Develop appropriate succession planning once the prototypes are established

It’s been said that there is no greater compliment than that of a transformed customer.

Enter Marilyn, a growth company leader having difficulty keeping up with the ever changing workforce landscape. When consulting a previous leadership coach, the profound suggestion was hardly the motivational speech she was looking for; “Maybe it’s time you update your resume?”

Similar to Marilyn, our goal is to help leaders demystify their brain by providing actionable insight. Insights such as where they are, where they want to be, and practical tools to help then navigate the obstacles to get there. By understanding the manner in which the brain influences our behavior, we can implement a greater understanding and awareness into our actions, emotions and biases through the lens of neuroscience. With established self-awareness, we can then enhance our ability to lead and understand others, resulting in better communication and relationships.

Our  B.A.R.R. model provides an easy tool to help understand the basic factors driving human motivation, and how these factors impact our personal approach towards everyday decisions and professional interactions.

Start the journey by learning about your behaviors, motivators and emotional intelligence, and how these factors collaborate or conflict with your business strategy. What did Marilyn say about our process? Throughout her 25 years of leadership experience, she found that the brain-based approach provided the least judgmental experience with the most positive outcome.

As far as development is concerned, it sounds like a no-brainer to us.

Organizational Change & Staff Development

Just the term “change management” is enough to scare the bejeepers out of any leader who is tasked with resolving cultural problems directly prohibiting company growth. In simple terms, it takes a holistic change of behaviors to garner different results. But how many companies, after implementing change, truly saw the desired outcomes? Our research has found that there are a lot of well-intentioned solutions thrown at the problem, but rarely a well-planned strategy.

After witnessing this inefficient process first hand, we sought out an expert that could educate us in an effective change management process. That expert was Dr. David Rock, co-founder and CEO of the NeuroLeadership Institute. His teaching, complimented by our three decades in the human capital space, allowed us to devise a change management process that aligns (engages) a team directionally to accomplish the identified goal. It’s a proven model that positions people and culture collaboratively to create a measured business outcome.

Change management programs:

  • Facilitation of vision and mission statements
  • Realignment of culture to a people strategy
  • Brain-based involvement of owners and senior leaders – link to coaching pages
  • Brain-based enhancement of leadership team
  • Brain-based enhancement of workforce population

Training & Workshops

If you are in some type of leadership space, it’s a sure bet that you’ve experienced some type of training. Certain programs align to your professional development, and some leave you with more questions than answers wondering, “Can I get a return on my time invested?” Regardless of your response, the real question is how much of this newfound information actually gets applied. Our team experienced the exact same phenomenon. We’ve attended some of the best conferences in the country and arrived home with autographed business books, 3 ring binders and a “conquer the world” attitude. Little by little the enthusiasm wavered, and after 3 days, the real world kicked in. Did you ever wonder if it was just you? Frankly, you’re more normal than abnormal.

That’s why Joan Graci, President and CEO of APA Solutions, went on a journey to understand what was happening in the brains of our target audience. The first step was identifying, and the data strongly suggested that engineering and technical mindsets were our demographic.

Joan’s training in NeuroLeadership opened her eyes to a whole new way of approaching instruction. In a sense, she began to see the workforce landscape through a brain-based lens. That’s why our workshops are focused around how the brain receives, decodes, and retrieves information to construct knowledge. These insights have truly become a cornerstone of our customized workshops.

The results have yielded a whole new perspective on change management, leadership development, training and instructional design. We can also customize programs that align with your business goals and strategies.
